Spacing / density

The influence of different crop densities (2x2, 2x1.5, 2x1, 2,5x2,5, 3x3, and 2x0.5m) on the vegetative development and first seed yield of 13 to 14 month-old shrubs has been investigated in our R&D test fields. Those plants, which are located at optimum distance from each other, have had the best vegetative development and the highest seed yields. Herewith it has been proven that root system under stress conditions (competing with neighbor root plants) gives lower yields.

So the conclusion is that Jatropha can be established from 3 months old seedling but the use of branch cutting for propagation is easier and the use of micro cutting is resulting in rapid expanding growth of plants’ sizes. However not in any climate and soil conditions micro cutting and branch cutting can be used. For the Indonesian situation the use of micro and branch cutting is successful, due to the climatological and soil conditions in most of the Indonesian areas. But in case of applying micro cuttings, this has to be carefully planned, to be managed well and the soil conditions has to be suitable /optimal for it.
